**Plot Summary:**
In an unnamed Southeast Asian country, a Prime Minister finalizes an agreement with an American water systems company, Cardiff. Shortly after, a rebel group launches a coup, assassinating the leader.
Seventeen hours earlier, Jack Dwyer (Owen Wilson), a new Cardiff employee, arrives in the country with his wife Annie (Lake Bell) and their two daughters, Lucy and Beeze. During their journey, they meet a British man named Hammond (Pierce Brosnan), who offers them a ride to the Imperial Lotus Hotel, a popular spot for foreigners. Upon arrival, Jack discovers that all communication channels—phones, TV, and the internet—are down across the city.
The next morning, Jack steps out to buy a newspaper and unexpectedly finds himself caught in the middle of a violent clash between riot police and armed protesters. As chaos erupts, Jack witnesses the rebels gaining control and mercilessly killing the police. He narrowly escapes and returns to the hotel, where he sees the rebels executing an American employee from Cardiff. Spotting Jack, a rebel soldier chases him, forcing Jack to flee through a fire escape.
Back in the hotel, the rebels storm the building, killing staff and guests indiscriminately. Jack reunites with his family but realizes Lucy is at the pool. He rushes to save her just as the rebels invade the pool area, while Annie fights to keep them out of their room.
