**Storyline:**
Louis “Lou” Bloom, a petty thief, is caught stealing from a Los Angeles construction site by a security guard. He attacks the guard, takes his watch, and escapes with the stolen materials. After selling the materials at a scrap yard, Lou asks for a job but is rejected for being a thief. On his way home, he witnesses a car crash and stops to watch. Stringers—freelance photojournalists—arrive and film the incident as police pull a woman from the burning wreck.
Intrigued, Lou learns from one of the stringers, Joe Loder, that they sell their footage to local news stations. Inspired, Lou steals a bicycle, pawns it, and buys a camcorder and a police scanner. After a couple of failed attempts, he successfully records the aftermath of a fatal carjacking and sells the footage to KWLA 6. The morning news director, Nina Romina, explains that the station prefers graphic footage of accidents and violent crimes in affluent, predominantly White neighborhoods.
Lou hires Rick, a desperate young hustler, as his assistant. To make his footage more impactful, Lou begins tampering with crime scenes, such as moving a body for a better shot. As his work gains attention, Lou upgrades his equipment and buys a faster car. He pressures Nina into a date, threatening to end their business relationship unless she agrees to sleep with him, which she reluctantly does.
When Joe beats Lou to a major plane crash story, Nina demands better footage. In retaliation, Lou sabotages Joe’s van, causing a crash that leaves Joe severely injured. Lou records the aftermath. Later, Lou and Rick arrive at a triple-homicide home invasion scene before the police. Lou films the gunmen fleeing and the victims inside the house.
