Description: “Next Exit,” the debut feature by writer/director Mali Elfman, begins with an intriguing premise that could easily be expanded into a limited series. However, it quickly evolves into a conventional road movie narrative. While not inherently bad, the film relies on its engaging elements to maintain interest throughout its runtime. Unfortunately, it fails to escalate dramatically and ends on a somewhat unsatisfying note.
The story revolves around the groundbreaking discovery that life after death has been scientifically proven. This revelation shakes society, leading to a surge in suicides and a decline in crime, as the fear of death diminishes. Amid this turmoil, Dr. Stevenson (Karen Gillan), a scientist at the Life Beyond Institute in San Francisco, seeks volunteers for euthanasia to further study the afterlife.
In New York, two individuals decide to participate in the program. Rose (Katie Parker) is a guilt-ridden young woman haunted by her past mistakes, while Teddy (Rahul Kohli) is a kind-hearted man searching for purpose after a childhood marked by his father’s abandonment. Together, they embark on a journey that intertwines their lives in unexpected ways.
