Neram, meaning “Time,” is a 2013 Indian black comedy thriller written, directed, and edited by Alphonse Puthren in his directorial debut. The film is a feature-length adaptation of Puthren’s 2009 short film of the same name. It was simultaneously produced in Malayalam and Tamil, starring Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim, and Bobby Simha in both versions. Supporting roles in the Malayalam version were played by Manoj K. Jayan, Shammi Thilakan, Lalu Alex, and Willson Joseph, while the Tamil version featured Nassar, Thambi Ramiah, John Vijay, and Shabareesh Varma. The film’s events unfold over a single day in Chennai.
Filming began in mid-2012 and concluded in March 2013. The music was composed by debutant Rajesh Murugesan, with cinematography by Anend C. Chandran. The Malayalam version premiered on May 10, 2013, followed by the Tamil version on May 17. Both were well-received critically and commercially. The film has since been remade in Telugu as *Run* starring Sundeep Kishan, in Marathi as *Time Bara Vait* featuring Bhushan Pradhan, and in Kannada as *Kismath* (2018) starring Vijay Raghavendra. A Hindi remake is also in the works.
The story revolves around Mathew (Vetri in Tamil) and Jeena (Veni in Tamil). Mathew, a computer engineering graduate, loses his job and struggles financially after borrowing money from a local moneylender, Vatti Raja. Unable to repay the loan, his life becomes complicated. Jeena’s father, Johnykutty (Saravanar in Tamil), opposes their relationship due to Mathew’s unemployment. Determined to be together, Jeena plans to elope with Mathew, and his friend John provides the money to repay Raja. However, during their escape, Jeena’s chain is snatched, and Mathew’s money is stolen. Raja demands repayment by 5 PM, leaving Mathew in a race against time. Meanwhile, Johnykutty reports Mathew to the police, accusing him of kidnapping Jeena, adding to the chaos.
