Description: The 2016 film “Neerja” tells the inspiring story of a young flight attendant who becomes a hero in the face of danger. Neerja Bhanot, a 22-year-old, arrives late for a party one evening, prompting her mother to express concerns about her career as a flight attendant and suggest a return to modeling. Neerja, however, remains determined to continue her job and is driven to the airport by her friend Jaideep.
As she boards Pan Am Flight 73, Neerja reflects on her past struggles, including an abusive arranged marriage in Doha, Qatar. Her husband, Naresh, mistreated her over her small dowry and inability to perform household chores. After leaving him, Neerja pursued a modeling career and eventually joined Pan Am Airways.
Mid-flight, the plane is hijacked by terrorists from the Abu Nidal organization. Neerja acts swiftly, alerting the cockpit crew, who manage to escape. The terrorists, unaware that the cockpit of a Boeing 747 is located upstairs, fail to prevent their getaway. The situation escalates when a passenger reveals himself as American, leading to his tragic murder by the hijackers.
Neerja and her colleagues work courageously to protect the passengers, disposing of American passports to prevent further hostages. When a Pakistani radio engineer is asked to identify himself, Neerja signals for him to remain seated, saving his life. Despite the terrorists’ efforts, Neerja’s bravery and quick thinking play a crucial role in safeguarding many lives.
This gripping tale highlights Neerja’s resilience, intelligence, and selfless courage in the face of terror.
