**Storyline:**
In 1974, John Adams Gates shares a fascinating family legend with his grandson, Benjamin Franklin Gates. He recounts how Charles Carroll of Carrollton revealed a secret to their ancestor, Thomas Gates, in 1832. This secret involved a legendary treasure amassed from ancient empires, discovered by the Knights Templar, and later safeguarded by the Freemasons. The Founding Fathers of the United States eventually hid this treasure in America. The key clue to finding it is the phrase, “The secret lies with Charlotte.” While young Ben is captivated by the tale, his father, Patrick, dismisses it as mere fantasy.
Thirty years later, Ben has become a renowned historian, cryptologist, and treasure hunter. He assembles a team, including colleague Ian Howe and computer expert Riley Poole, to locate the *Charlotte*, a ship lost in the Arctic that holds the first clue to the treasure. During their expedition, they discover a meerschaum pipe containing a riddle that points to the next clue being hidden in the Declaration of Independence. When Ian proposes stealing the document, Ben opposes, leading to a violent confrontation. A fire breaks out, forcing the team to split as the ship explodes.
Ben and Riley return to Washington, DC, to warn authorities—including Homeland Security, the FBI, and Dr. Abigail Chase of the National Archives—about the potential theft of the Declaration. However, their warnings are ignored. Determined to protect the document, Ben devises a plan to steal it himself during a gala event at the Archives. Using Abigail’s fingerprints, he successfully retrieves the Declaration but is confronted by Ian’s group, who have also arrived to claim it.
