Description: “My Neighbor Totoro” is a 1988 Japanese animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, produced by Studio Ghibli, and distributed by Tokuma Shoten. Featuring voice actors Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto, and Hitoshi Takagi, the film follows the story of two young sisters, Satsuki and Mei, as they interact with friendly woodland spirits in post-war rural Japan. The movie received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize and the Mainichi Film Award for Best Film in 1988. In 1989, Streamline Pictures created an exclusive English dub for Japan Airlines’ transpacific flights. Troma Films later distributed this version in the United States in 1993, followed by VHS, laserdisc, and DVD releases by Fox Video in 1994 and 2002, respectively. After the rights to this dub expired in 2004, Walt Disney Home Entertainment re-released the film in 2006 with a new English dub. This version was also distributed in Australia and the UK in the same year. Notably, this DVD release marked the first time the film was available in both Japanese and English audio tracks in the United States.
“My Neighbor Totoro” has since gained a global cult following, with its titular character becoming a cultural icon. As of September 2019, the film has grossed over $41 million at the box office, with additional earnings of $277 million from home video sales and $1.142 billion from licensed merchandise, totaling approximately $1.46 billion in lifetime revenue. The film is available in multiple audio formats, including English, Japanese, and Hindi, all in a single file.
