Description: The film “My Father Mujib,” released in 2021, tells a compelling story set in a scenic village named Tungipara, located along the Baigar River, a tributary of the Madhumati. The area is characterized by lush landscapes adorned with Tal, Tamal, and Hijal trees, as well as the soothing melodies of Bhatiali songs sung by boatmen. Birds chirping and the gentle murmur of the river create a serene atmosphere.
Historically, about 200 years ago, the Madhumati River flowed close to the village. Over time, the river shifted, creating new land for human settlement. The ancestors of the protagonist settled in this riverine village to spread Islam while maintaining their business connections with Kolkata Port. They cultivated the land, built a self-sufficient community, and relied on boats for transportation until the development of Gopalganj Thana as a steamer station.
In 1854, a paved house was constructed with the help of skilled workers from Kolkata, remnants of which still stand as a testament to the past. However, during the events of 1971, Pakistani military forces destroyed two buildings in the area. Prior to this, the village had seen growth in population and infrastructure.
The protagonist’s grandfather, Sheikh Lutfur Rahman, raised his family in a four-sided tin-roof house built by his father, Sheikh Abdul Hamid. It was here that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the protagonist’s father, was born on March 17, 1920. Named during his Akika ceremony by his maternal grandfather, Sheikh Abdul Majid, Mujibur Rahman was destined for greatness. His grandmother was inspired to leave her entire inheritance to her daughter, declaring, “Ma Sayera, I gave your son such a name that it will become world-famous.”
This narrative captures the cultural and historical richness of the region, intertwined with the personal story of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.
