Description: “My Father and My Son” (2005) is a Turkish drama that explores family, political conflict, and reconciliation. The story follows Sadık, who leaves his village on the Aegean coast to study journalism in Istanbul, against his father Hüseyin’s wishes. Hüseyin, who wanted Sadık to study Agricultural Engineering to manage the family farm, disowns him when he becomes involved in left-wing political activism. Tragedy strikes when, during the 1980 military coup in Turkey, Sadık’s pregnant wife dies giving birth to their son, Deniz, in a park under curfew. Sadık is later arrested, tortured, and imprisoned for three years due to his political activities, leaving him in poor health. Years after his release, Sadık learns he is terminally ill and takes Deniz to his family farm, where he entrusts his son to his estranged parents. Deniz, fascinated by comic books, meets his eccentric relatives, including his grandmother, who drives a tractor and communicates via shortwave radio, his aunt, adorned with countless bracelets, and his naive uncle. As the story unfolds, Sadık and Hüseyin must confront their strained relationship, while Sadık also reconnects with his first love and old friends. Eventually, Sadık succumbs to his illness, and his parents take on the role of raising Deniz, who gradually comes to terms with his father’s loss. The film is a poignant exploration of family bonds, forgiveness, and the enduring impact of political turmoil.
