**Storyline:**
Thirty-year-old Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos is part of a large, boisterous Greek family in Chicago that constantly pressures her to marry and have children. She works at her family’s restaurant, “Dancing Zorba’s,” but feels unfulfilled and dreams of doing more with her life. One day, she meets Ian Miller, a charming schoolteacher, and is instantly attracted to him. Their playful banter sparks a connection, and Toula decides to pursue personal growth by enrolling in a computer course to improve the restaurant’s operations. Her father, Gus, initially resists the idea, feeling that Toula is abandoning him, but her mother, Maria, persuades Gus to support her.
As Toula gains confidence, she transforms her appearance, adopting a more stylish look with contact lenses, makeup, and vibrant clothing. She takes a tourism and computer course, which her Aunt Voula suggests could benefit her travel agency. Voula and Maria cleverly convince Gus to allow Toula to work at the agency.
Meanwhile, Toula and Ian’s relationship deepens. Knowing her family would disapprove of her dating a non-Greek, Toula hides their relationship, but Ian discovers her true identity and remains smitten. When her family finds out, Gus is outraged that Ian didn’t seek his permission to date Toula, despite their adulthood.
