Description: In 2019, the Hindi film *Mushkil* tells the story of four friends—Shafaq Naaz, Nazia Hussain, Pooja Bisht, and Archana Shastry—who are vacationing in Greece. Their trip takes a terrifying turn when they encounter a spirit haunting the villa they are staying in. Despite the efforts of their guide, Kunaal Roy Kapur, the spirit traps them in Greece. Enter Rajniesh Duggall, a man skilled in dealing with the supernatural, who steps in to rescue them from their ordeal.
The film follows the familiar haunted house horror formula: moving furniture, eerie nighttime noises, shadowy figures, and young women as the primary targets. *Mushkil* sticks to this template but adds its own twists. The story shifts between Varanasi and Greece, with Rajniesh’s character given a backstory rooted in Varanasi, while the other characters remain underdeveloped. To showcase the picturesque Greek landscapes, the film includes a few romantic songs, which are visually appealing but feel somewhat out of place.
However, *Mushkil* struggles with execution. Key scenes are poorly lit, making it hard to discern whether this was an intentional stylistic choice or simply a mistake. The creature effects and CGI are subpar, failing to deliver the intended scares. The overall experience feels like a poorly narrated campfire story—it has all the elements but lacks the impact.
Kunaal Roy Kapur and Rajniesh Duggall deliver average performances as the guide and the supernatural expert, respectively, and the four female leads, while believable as friends on vacation, are given little to do. In the end, *Mushkil* is a film that might capture your attention with its scenic beauty but ultimately falls short in delivering a truly chilling horror experience.
