Description: In 1934, the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot investigates a theft at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Known for his OCD and a relentless pursuit of balance in life, Poirot views his ability to detect lies as both a gift and a curse. His friend Bouc, nephew of the director of the luxurious Orient Express train service, secures a bunk for Poirot to return to London. Onboard the train, Poirot travels with Bouc and thirteen other passengers: Caroline Hubbard, an American widow; Edward Ratchett, an American businessman, accompanied by his English manservant Edward Masterman and secretary Hector McQueen; elderly Russian Princess Natalia Dragomiroff and her German maid Hildegarde Schmidt; Hungarian diplomat Count Rudolf Andrenyi and his wife Elena; Dr. John Arbuthnot; teacher Mary Debenham; Spanish missionary Pilar Estravados; Cuban-American car salesman Biniamino Marquez; and Austrian university professor Gerhard Hardman.
Ratchett offers to hire Poirot as his bodyguard during the three-day journey, revealing he has received anonymous threats. However, Poirot declines upon discovering Ratchett’s shady past as a con artist. During the night, Poirot hears strange noises from Ratchett’s compartment and spots a figure in a red kimono fleeing down the hallway. The journey is abruptly interrupted when an avalanche derails the train, leaving the passengers stranded.
The next morning, Ratchett is found dead, stabbed multiple times. Poirot and Bouc begin investigating the passengers as repairs are made. Evidence suggests Ratchett was murdered by one individual, and Mrs. Hubbard claims a man entered her compartment during the night. Poirot uncovers a partially burned note linking Ratchett to the kidnapping and murder of Daisy Armstrong, a young girl who was taken from her home for ransom but tragically killed despite her family’s payment.
