Description: Raja falls head over heels for Apoorva after seeing her at a wedding. Their love story appears perfect and charming, but something causes them to drift apart. “Mugilpete,” released in 2022, has sparked interest for its references to iconic scenes from Crazy Star V Ravichandran’s classic films, now recreated for his son, Young Crazy Star Manu. However, while the film captures some of the magic of Ravichandran’s timeless love stories, it only partially succeeds.
Presented as a traditional romantic entertainer, “Mugilpete” includes comedy, action, emotional family dynamics, and songs for the lead pair. While the filmmaker assembles all the necessary elements, the narrative feels drawn out, stretching over two hours. The story follows Raja as he searches for his lost love, Apoorva, with flashbacks revealing their once-ideal relationship. The central question is what caused their separation and whether they will reunite.
The movie explores emotional themes such as family bonds and friendship, alongside a comic relief character typical of commercial cinema. However, reducing the focus on action sequences and gags could have intensified the love story’s impact.
Manuranjan delivers a committed performance, especially in romantic and comedic scenes, often reminiscent of his father’s prime. Debutant Kayadu Lohar shines as the quintessential commercial heroine, while Avinash and Thara excel in their roles as the protagonist’s parents. Despite its flaws, “Mugilpete” offers a nostalgic yet uneven cinematic experience.
