At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, it earned nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Blige) and Best Original Song (“Mighty River”). The film also made history at the 90th Academy Awards, securing four nominations: Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song for Blige, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Rachel Morrison became the first woman nominated for Best Cinematography, while Dee Rees became the first Black woman nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Set in the Mississippi Delta, the film opens with white brothers Henry and Jamie McAllan struggling to bury their father during a rainstorm. When a black sharecropper family, the Jacksons, passes by, Henry reluctantly asks for their help. The story then shifts to a few years earlier, when Henry, deceived into renting a poor home, moves his wife Laura, their daughters, and his racist father, Pappy, to a farm near Marietta, Mississippi.
