Description: In the 1960s, a schoolteacher named Mahir Öğretmen, living in a Turkish seaside town, is transferred to a remote village against his family’s wishes. His journey involves a long bus ride followed by a trek through mountains, as the government had not built roads to the village. Upon arrival, he discovers the village is more like a small settlement. The villagers initially approach him with guns but allow him to stay after learning his identity. They inform him there is no school, and the children are destined to remain illiterate, a challenge Mahir feels unprepared to tackle. The village elder explains their harsh reality: “For eight months, we live by God’s will, and for the remaining four, we depend on the government.”
Determined to bring education to the village, Mahir attempts to secure government support for a school but fails. However, with the support of the village chief, he devises a plan. He calls his family, claiming to have been kidnapped by bandits, and uses the money they send to build the school with the help of villagers and mountain bandits. Meanwhile, the story highlights village life, including the humorous tradition of elders choosing brides for the younger generation.
The film explores themes of perseverance, community, and the transformative power of education in a challenging environment.
