Set in 1957 London, the story follows Ada Harris, a widowed cleaning lady who becomes captivated by a haute couture Dior dress owned by one of her clients. Inspired, she decides to purchase her own Dior dress. After unexpectedly receiving a war widow’s pension, Ada embarks on an adventure to Paris to fulfill her dream. During her trip, she stumbles upon a showcase of Dior’s 10th anniversary collection and befriends André, the Dior accountant, and Natasha, a Dior model. However, Claudine, the Dior director, disapproves of Ada’s presence in the exclusive world of haute couture.
Despite Dior’s financial struggles, Ada’s willingness to pay in cash convinces them to create a dress for her. While in Paris for fittings, she stays with André and encourages him to pursue his feelings for Natasha, who shares his interest in existential philosophy. When financial constraints force Claudine to lay off several Dior employees, Ada organizes a strike, compelling Claudine and Christian Dior to consider André’s innovative ideas to modernize and revitalize the business.
Upon returning to London, Ada lends her dress to Pamela, a struggling actress and one of her clients. Unfortunately, the dress is ruined when it catches fire at an event. Learning of the incident through a newspaper article, Ada’s friends at Dior send her a replacement dress—one she had initially desired even more than the one she purchased.
