Description: Mr. Go is a 2013 South Korean sport-comedy film directed by Kim Yong-hwa, inspired by Huh Young-man’s 1984 comic “The 7th Team.” The story follows a gorilla named Ling Ling, who becomes a baseball superstar under the management of 15-year-old Wei Wei. After the Great Sichuan earthquake leaves Wei Wei with overwhelming debt, she is forced to let Ling Ling join the Korean Baseball League under agent Sung. Renamed “Mr. Go,” the gorilla quickly gains popularity and leads the Doosan Bears to an impressive winning streak.
The film marks a milestone as South Korea’s first fully 3D-shot movie. Director Kim Yong-hwa, known for hits like “200 Pounds Beauty” and “Take Off,” was inspired by the viral YouTube video of Christian the lion, which highlighted the bond between humans and animals. To bring Ling Ling to life realistically, a team of over 500 animators and CG experts spent four years developing advanced motion capture and facial animation technologies. The result was a highly detailed gorilla character, with 3.8 million digitally crafted hairs that moved naturally with the wind.
A joint production between South Korea and China, “Mr. Go” was released in both countries in July 2013. The film combines humor, heart, and cutting-edge visual effects to tell an unforgettable story of friendship and triumph.
