Description: Dodge Tynes, a former athlete and bankrupt real estate developer from Detroit, suffers from a severe headache and collapses. Upon waking in the hospital, he and his pregnant wife, Val, receive devastating news: Dodge has an inoperable brain tumor. A nurse gives him a business card for Tiro Fund, a company that claims to assist those with terminal illnesses facing financial difficulties.
Dodge visits Tiro Fund and meets Miles Sellars, who presents him with a deadly proposition. For 24 hours, Dodge will be hunted by five “hunters” trying to kill him. In exchange, he will receive money in his bank account for every hour he survives, with the amount increasing as time passes. Miles explains the rules: Dodge cannot stop or pause the game, reveal his participation to anyone, or leave Detroit. Breaking these rules means the game continues until his death. Initially, Dodge refuses but later accepts, hoping to secure financial stability for his wife and unborn child.
The game begins at sunrise in a diner, where Miles confiscates Dodge’s belongings, leaving him only with his medication, an ultrasound of his child, and a phone that tracks his location. Every hour, the hunters receive his location for 15 seconds.
As the hunt progresses, Dodge encounters and evades the five hunters: Nixon, a rule-following British gentleman; Reagan, a southern cowboy; Carter, a psychologist using Dodge’s profile to predict his moves; Kennedy, a martial arts expert; and LBJ, an older man Dodge had seen earlier. He also meets Connell, one of Miles’ subordinates tasked with monitoring him and cleaning up after the game.
Meanwhile, Val accesses Dodge’s laptop and notices $300,000 deposited into his account. When he fails to answer her calls, she grows suspicious.
