**Storyline:**
In 17th-century Japan, the Lin Kuei clan, led by Bi-Han, attacks the village of Hanzo Hasashi and the Shirai Ryu clan, killing Hanzo’s wife and son. However, their infant daughter is hidden and saved. Hanzo manages to kill all the attackers but is ultimately murdered by Bi-Han with his own kunai. As Hanzo’s spirit is sent to the Netherrealm, Lord Raiden appears and rescues his daughter, taking her to safety.
In the present day, the realm of Outworld is close to defeating Earthrealm, having won nine out of ten deadly tournaments known as “Mortal Kombat.” These tournaments determine the fate of the losing realm, allowing the winner to conquer or merge it. However, an ancient prophecy emerges, stating that the “blood of Hanzo Hasashi” will unite a new generation of Earthrealm’s champions to prevent Outworld’s victory.
Shang Tsung, a soul-eating sorcerer, learns of the prophecy and sends his champions, including Bi-Han, now known as Sub-Zero, to hunt and kill all individuals marked with a dragon symbol before the next tournament begins.
One of the targets is Cole Young, a former MMA fighter who often experiences visions of Hanzo calling for his release. When Sub-Zero attacks Cole and his family, they are rescued by Jackson “Jax” Briggs, a Special Forces major. Jax explains the significance of Cole’s dragon mark and instructs him to find Sonya Blade, his partner, while staying behind to fight Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero severely injures Jax, leaving him for dead.
Cole locates Sonya, who reveals she and Jax had been investigating Mortal Kombat after their platoon was massacred during an operation in Brazil by someone matching Sub-Zero’s abilities.
