**Storyline:**
Mortal Kombat is a martial arts tournament held every generation between representatives of Earth and Outworld, created by the Elder Gods to prevent an invasion of Earth by Outworld. If Outworld wins ten consecutive tournaments, its Emperor can invade and conquer Earth. With nine victories already secured, the stakes are higher than ever.
Shaolin monk Liu Kang, movie star Johnny Cage, and military officer Sonya Blade are chosen by Raiden, the God of Thunder and protector of Earthrealm, to face the powerful adversaries of Outworld. Each has personal reasons for competing: Liu seeks revenge on Shang Tsung for killing his brother, Sonya aims to avenge her fallen colleague by targeting the crime lord Kano, and Johnny strives to prove his martial arts skills are genuine.
On Shang Tsung’s island, Liu is drawn to Princess Kitana, the Emperor’s adopted daughter. While Liu defeats his first opponent and Sonya avenges her partner by killing Kano, Johnny narrowly triumphs over Scorpion. During a brief duel with Kitana, Liu receives cryptic advice that helps him defeat Sub-Zero.
Meanwhile, Prince Goro, a formidable fighter, dominates the tournament, defeating all challengers, including Johnny’s friend Art Lean. As the Earth warriors face mounting challenges, Raiden reveals that their fears and egos are their greatest obstacles to victory.
Will Liu, Sonya, and Johnny overcome their weaknesses and stop Outworld from claiming its tenth victory? The fate of Earthrealm hangs in the balance.
