Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams), an aspiring news producer, has always dreamed of working for the Today show. However, her intense focus on her career makes it difficult for her to find love. After losing her job at Good Morning New Jersey, her mother encourages her to abandon her professional dreams to avoid further disappointment. Determined to succeed, Becky lands an opportunity at IBS News, where she is hired as the producer for the struggling national morning show, DayBreak.
During her job interview with executive Jerry Barnes (Jeff Goldblum), Becky faces skepticism about her abilities and the show’s potential. Shortly after, she encounters her idol, renowned journalist Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford), who dismisses her in an elevator. Despite the challenges, Jerry hires Becky, and she relocates to New York City to take on her new role.
Becky quickly discovers that DayBreak is in disarray, plagued by mismanagement and budget constraints. She meets the show’s sharp-tongued co-host, Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), and fires the inappropriate co-host Paul McVee (Ty Burrell), earning the respect of her colleagues. Becky recruits Mike as Colleen’s new co-host, leveraging a clause in his contract to force him to participate.
As Becky works to revive DayBreak, she begins a relationship with Adam Bennett (Patrick Wilson), an IBS producer familiar with Mike’s difficult behavior. While Adam initially supports Becky’s dedication, Mike’s disdain for morning television threatens the show’s progress. On his debut, Mike sabotages the broadcast by refusing to engage, rejecting segments he deems unworthy, and clashing with Colleen. Becky must navigate these challenges to save the show and achieve her dreams.
