The idea for the film emerged following Sony’s announcement of a shared universe inspired by Spider-Man characters, starting with Venom in 2018. By November 2017, Sazama and Sharpless had completed the script, and Leto and Espinosa officially joined the project in June 2018. Casting and pre-production progressed throughout the year, with filming commencing in London in February 2019 and concluding by June 2019. The movie premiered in Mexico City on March 10, 2022, and was released in the United States on April 1, 2022, after multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite some praise for Leto’s performance, the film received predominantly negative reviews, with critics labeling it uninspired and outdated.
The story begins with a young Michael Morbius in Greece, welcoming his surrogate brother, Lucien, whom he renames Milo. Both boys suffer from a rare blood disorder that prevents their bodies from producing blood. After Michael saves Milo’s life by repairing his blood pump, their father arranges for Michael to attend a specialized school for gifted students in America, while continuing to care for Milo. Twenty-five years later, Dr. Michael Morbius, now 35, declines a Nobel Prize for developing synthetic blood, as it fails to provide a long-term cure for his condition.
