Description: Moonrise Kingdom is a 2012 film set on the New England island of New Penzance. The story follows 12-year-old orphan Sam Shakusky, who is attending Camp Ivanhoe, a Khaki Scout summer camp led by Scout Master Randy Ward. Suzy Bishop, also 12, lives on the island with her parents, Walt and Laura, both attorneys, and her three younger brothers in a house named Summer’s End. Both Sam and Suzy are introverted, intelligent, and mature for their age. They first meet in the summer of 1965 during a church performance of *Noye’s Fludde* and become pen pals. Over time, their correspondence turns romantic, and they secretly plan to reunite and run away together.

In September 1965, they carry out their plan. Sam escapes from Camp Ivanhoe, while Suzy runs away from her home. The two meet up and journey through the wilderness, camping and fishing with the goal of reaching a secluded cove on the island. Meanwhile, the Khaki Scouts discover Sam’s absence and find a letter where he resigns from the group. Scout Master Ward organizes a search party to find him. When Ward contacts Sam’s foster parents, the Billingsleys, he learns that Sam is an orphan with a history of behavioral issues.

Eventually, the Khaki Scouts locate Sam and Suzy, leading to a confrontation. During the struggle, Suzy injures one of the Scouts with a pair of scissors, and a stray arrow kills the camp dog, Snoopy. The Scouts retreat, and Sam and Suzy continue their journey to the cove, which they name “Moonrise Kingdom.” They set up camp, share their first kiss, and enjoy a moment of young love.

Soon after, Suzy’s parents, Scout Master Ward, the Khaki Scouts, and Island Police Captain Duffy Sharp find them. Suzy is taken home, and Sam receives a letter from his foster parents stating they no longer wish to care for him. The film captures the innocence, adventure, and complexity of young love against the backdrop of a whimsical, nostalgic setting.
