Description: The 2022 movie “Monstrous” is a psychological horror film that fails to captivate its audience despite its initial potential. The story revolves around Laura Butler, played by Christina Ricci, and her 7-year-old son Cody, portrayed by Santino Barnard. The duo relocates to California, ostensibly to escape Laura’s abusive husband, though their journey lacks urgency or tension. They settle into a rented home in a remote rural area, owned by the Langtrees, surrounded by a vast landscape and a pond.
Laura takes on a mundane office job under an equally unremarkable boss, Mr. Alonzo, while attempting to bring stability to her son’s life. However, Cody becomes convinced that a monster from the nearby pond is haunting their new home. This creature, far from being a product of a child’s imagination, manifests itself and begins tormenting Cody. Despite this, Cody begins referring to the monster as the “pretty lady,” incorporating it into his drawings. Laura, though slightly disturbed, remains more focused on helping Cody adjust to his new environment.
The film, burdened by its lackluster narrative and uninspired execution, feels like the result of excessive compromises and financial negotiations rather than a coherent artistic vision. With an overwhelming number of executive producers, “Monstrous” struggles to deliver anything engaging or memorable, ultimately falling short of its potential.
