**Storyline:**
A NASA space probe, sent to investigate extraterrestrial life in the solar system, crashes in Mexico, leading to the spread of alien life forms across the Mexico–United States border region. As a result, the northern half of Mexico is quarantined, and US and Mexican military forces struggle to contain the creatures. A massive wall is built along the border to protect the United States.
Andrew Kaulder, an American photojournalist, is tasked by his employer with finding his daughter, Samantha Wynden, and bringing her back to the US. Andrew locates Samantha in a Mexican hospital, and they board a train. However, they discover that the tracks ahead are damaged. Learning that travel routes will soon be blocked for six months, they decide to hitchhike to the coast. Andrew purchases an expensive ferry ticket for Samantha, but their passports are stolen after a local woman seduces Andrew. Unable to board the ferry, Samantha barters her engagement ring for passage through the quarantine zone.
Traveling by riverboat, they are handed over to armed escorts who plan to guide them to the Mexico–US border. Their convoy is attacked by the creatures, and only Andrew and Samantha survive. As they continue their journey, they find the bodies of dead travelers and bond atop an ancient pyramid overlooking the border wall. By the time they reach the border, the creatures have already crossed into the United States.
In Texas, they navigate through a deserted, damaged town and find an abandoned gas station with power. They call the military for help and contact their families while waiting. A creature silently approaches the station, and Samantha notices its tentacles exploring the interior, drawn to the light of a television. She quickly unplugs the TV, and the creature loses interest, leaving them unharmed.
