**Storyline:**
When I initially heard the title, I was intrigued. A Monster Run? I wondered what it could be—a 500m dash? A 10km race? Perhaps even a marathon? I imagined monsters competing, with my bet on the Werewolf since he’s the only one who actually runs. Dracula would fly, and The Mummy and Frankenstein would just shuffle menacingly. I even hoped they’d remember to stretch properly.
However, upon learning more about the film, I realized it’s not about a monster race. Instead, it’s a Cantonese fantasy-action movie centered on a girl who discovers that monsters live among us. The story follows Ji Mo (Jessie Li), an ordinary convenience store worker with a tragic past. She has the ability to see strange creatures invisible to others, which leads people to believe she’s insane and creates tension with her mother.
One day, her store is attacked by one of these monsters. Enter Ming Ge (Shawn Yue) and his sidekick, Paper, a sentient paper puppet (voiced by Shan Qiao). They save Ji Mo and reveal that the creatures she sees are real and from another realm. They also warn her about sinister figures, led by the ruthless Lotus (Kara Hui), who threaten humanity. Together, Ji Mo, Ming Ge, and Paper embark on a wild adventure filled with bizarre creatures, magical powers, and plenty of paper-folding.
The film is loosely based on the novel *Monster* by American author A. Lee Martinez. It’s fascinating how a Western novel transformed into a Hong Kong/China production—much like how Disney adapted the Chinese folktale *Mulan*.
What makes *Monster Run* stand out is its creativity. The world it builds is captivating: monster hunters use Taoist charms to trap their targets, rival hunters are incredibly cool, and characters travel using a giant coral-like worm. It’s a unique blend of fantasy and action that keeps viewers engaged.
