**Plot Summary:**
The story follows 12-year-old D.J. Walters, whose parents leave him under the care of his babysitter Zee for the weekend. D.J. has been observing his elderly neighbor, Horace Nebbercracker, who frightens kids away from his yard and takes their possessions. When D.J.’s best friend, Chowder, loses his basketball on Nebbercracker’s lawn, D.J. tries to retrieve it but is caught. The confrontation causes Nebbercracker to collapse, seemingly from a heart attack, and he is rushed away by an ambulance.
That night, D.J. receives eerie phone calls from the house with no one responding. Zee’s boyfriend, Bones, visits and shares a childhood memory of Nebbercracker stealing his kite, along with rumors that Nebbercracker consumed his wife. After being kicked out by Zee, Bones notices his lost kite at the house’s doorstep and is abruptly taken by the house while attempting to reclaim it.
D.J. and Chowder investigate but retreat when the house comes alive and attacks them. The next day, a schoolgirl named Jenny Bennett is almost consumed by the house while selling Halloween candy. The children save her and try to report the incident to police officers Landers and Lister, who dismiss their claims as the house remains dormant in the presence of adults.
Seeking answers, the trio consults supernatural expert Reginald “Skull” Skulinski, who explains that the house is a rare monster formed when a human soul merges with a structure. To defeat it, they must destroy its “heart,” which they deduce is the furnace. The children create a dummy filled with cold medicine from Chowder’s father’s pharmacy to neutralize the house. However, their plan is foiled when Landers and Lister arrest them for stealing the medicine. Before the officers can leave, the house devours them and traps the children inside.
Monster House is a thrilling adventure as the kids race to destroy the monster house before it claims more victims.
