Description: The downfall of Pornhub, as recognized by many of its users, began with an op-ed. In December 2020, Nicholas Kristof’s article, “The Children of Pornhub,” published in the New York Times, exposed multiple instances of child sex abuse content on one of the internet’s top 10 most-visited sites. Kristof’s sources shared distressing stories that highlighted a significant issue. Among them was Serena K. Fleites, who, at age 14, sent nude videos to a crush, which later appeared on Pornhub and became nearly impossible to remove.
A Colombian teenager also revealed that Pornhub profited from a video of her having sex at 16, calling it the worst moment of her life. In the Netflix documentary *Money Shot: The Pornhub Story*, Kristof recounts his initial skepticism upon learning about illegal content on the platform. However, his investigation confirmed the alarming reality.
Kristof proposed three solutions to address the problem, which were described as “insanely reasonable” by Siri Dahl, a porn performer who earned income through Pornhub’s Modelhub. Dahl, a key figure in the documentary, supported Kristof’s 2020 suggestions, emphasizing the importance of verification, moderation, and combating piracy—all critical concerns within the sex work community.
