Description: In “Mojin: The Worm Valley” (2018), the story follows Hu Bayi, Wang Fatzi, Shirley Yang, and their group as they journey through the hidden underground waterways of the ancient Longfeng Mountains in search of the Tomb of Emperor Xian in Yunnan Province. The tomb is situated on a perilous island teeming with ancient creatures, including a legendary immortal worm. Along the way, they encounter numerous threats, such as strange fish and deceased humans controlled by toxic worms infesting their bodies. As they delve deeper into the jungle, the group faces relentless challenges from monstrous adversaries. Despite the odds, they manage to overcome every obstacle and uncover the crucial element needed to break the Ghost Eye curse.
While the film may not stand out as memorably as some of its genre counterparts, such as “The Descent” or “Pitch Black,” it still delivers a gripping and tense thriller experience. It effectively utilizes a familiar formula, though it doesn’t entirely transcend it. As one of the first releases in several countries’ newly reopened theaters, “Abyss” is set to debut in U.S. drive-ins and on-demand platforms starting August 7.
The narrative revolves around two athletic couples embarking on a weekend adventure. Eric and Yolanda are the more adventurous pair, while their spouses, Jennifer and Viktor, join more out of loyalty than enthusiasm. Viktor, who has recently overcome cancer, would rather relax on a beach, while Yolanda has some important news to share. However, they are persuaded to explore a newly discovered underground cave network by Eric, who is eager for adventure. Their journey takes a dangerous turn as they navigate the treacherous depths, facing unforeseen challenges and life-threatening situations.
