**Storyline:**
The Tramp works on an assembly line, enduring immense stress from the repetitive and fast-paced work. This eventually leads to a nervous breakdown, causing chaos in the factory when he gets stuck in a machine. After recovering in the hospital, he’s left unemployed. Mistakenly arrested during a Communist demonstration, he is sent to jail, where he accidentally consumes smuggled cocaine. In his delirious state, he avoids returning to his cell and later becomes a hero by stopping a jailbreak. Despite being offered early release, he prefers life in jail.
After being released, he tries working for a shipbuilder but causes an accident and leaves. Soon, he meets Ellen, an orphaned girl fleeing the police after stealing bread. To save her, he falsely claims responsibility for the theft, but a witness exposes him, and he’s freed. Determined to return to jail, he eats a large meal at a cafeteria without paying and gets arrested. Later, he and Ellen escape from a police vehicle.
The Tramp then lands a job as a night watchman at a department store. There, he encounters three burglars, including a former coworker, who explain their desperate situation. After sharing drinks with them, he wakes up during store hours and is arrested again for failing to report the burglars and for sleeping in the store’s clothes.
