The story begins after the capture of Solomon Lane, with the remnants of the ‘Syndicate’ now known as ‘The Apostles.’ Ethan Hunt receives a critical message about John Lark, a member of the Apostles, planning to purchase three plutonium cores from black market arms dealers in Berlin. Additionally, John Lark has captured a Russian nuclear weapons specialist, whom Ethan manages to apprehend. During the exchange in Berlin, Ethan disguises himself as John Lark, but the mission goes awry when Luther is taken hostage. Ethan prioritizes saving Luther, but the plutonium cores are lost.
Later, Ethan interrogates the Russian specialist in a hospital. While watching a CNN report about attacks in Jerusalem, the Vatican, and Mecca caused by the plutonium cores, the specialist agrees to provide the code to his laptop to track John Lark, but only if CNN broadcasts a statement about the necessity of suffering for peace.
The CNN story turns out to be staged, revealing that no actual attacks have occurred. Ethan discovers that John Lark intends to buy the plutonium cores from a woman known as the ‘White Widow’ during a gala in Paris. The White Widow runs a charitable organization that secretly deals in weapons and nuclear arms. CIA agent August Walker accompanies Ethan to Paris, tasked with monitoring him due to the earlier failure in Berlin.
During a high-altitude HALO jump, Walker is struck by lightning, but Ethan saves his life by sharing his oxygen supply. They successfully land and proceed to the gala, where they locate John Lark. Ethan plans to steal his identity to deceive the White Widow, but a confrontation erupts in the bathroom. Unexpectedly, Ilsa appears and kills Lark, altering the course of the mission.
