The story begins with a security guard desperately running through a subway station, only to find himself trapped in a room. He pleads for his life as his reflection in a mirror uses a shard to slit its own throat, causing the guard to suffer the same fatal wound.
The plot follows Ben Carson, a suspended police detective, who starts his new job as a night security guard at the Mayflower, a luxury department store destroyed by a fire five years earlier. The building still houses numerous mirrors from its past. On his first night, Ben notices a mirror with handprints visible only on the reflected side and an open door in the reflection that is actually closed. Initially dismissing these occurrences as hallucinations, he later finds the wallet of Gary Lewis, the previous guard who reportedly committed suicide. Inside the wallet is a note with the word “Esseker.”
Ben becomes convinced that the mirrors force people to harm themselves. Meanwhile, his sister Angie is killed when her reflection violently pulls its own jaw apart, causing her to bleed to death. Devastated, Ben tries to destroy the mirrors but finds them indestructible. He demands to know what the mirrors want, and cracks form on one, spelling out “ESSEKER.”
Deepening his investigation, Ben explores the flooded basement of the Mayflower and uncovers a sign indicating the building once housed “St. Matthew’s Hospital” and “Psychiatric Studies.” Behind a damaged wall, he discovers a chamber filled with mirrors, revealing it to be a Psychomanteum.
This chilling tale explores the terrifying power of reflections and the dark secrets hidden within the Mayflower.
