Description: In December 1937, Lieutenant Commander Edwin T. Layton, an American naval intelligence officer, meets with Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in Tokyo. Yamamoto warns that Japan will act swiftly if the U.S. threatens their oil supply. On December 7, 1941, Japan launches a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, prompting the U.S. to enter World War II. Lieutenant Dick Best and the USS Enterprise’s air group fail to locate the Japanese fleet. In the following months, the U.S. conducts raids on the Marshall Islands and Japan, engaging in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Yamamoto plans an ambitious invasion of Midway Island using four carriers from the Kido Butai fleet.
Joseph Rochefort and his team intercept coded messages referring to a location labeled “AF.” Layton suspects “AF” is Midway Atoll, contrary to Washington’s belief it’s in the South Pacific. To confirm, Layton instructs Midway to send an unencrypted message about a water shortage. Japanese communications about water shortages on “AF” confirm Midway as the target. In preparation for an ambush, Admiral Chester Nimitz orders the USS Hornet and Enterprise to return from the Coral Sea and repairs the damaged USS Yorktown for combat. On June 4, 1942, Japan strikes Midway, causing significant damage.
