Description: In the 2019 film *Midsommar*, psychology student Dani Ardor experiences deep trauma after her sister Terri takes her own life, along with their parents, by filling their home with carbon monoxide. This tragic event further strains Dani’s already troubled relationship with her emotionally distant boyfriend, a cultural anthropology student named Christian Hughes.
Christian and his friends Mark and Josh are invited by their Swedish friend Pelle to attend a midsummer festival at Pelle’s ancestral commune, Hårga, located in Hälsingland. This unique celebration occurs only once every 90 years, and Josh, an anthropology student, is eager to write his thesis about it. Christian initially keeps the trip a secret from Dani, planning to end their relationship before leaving, but reluctantly invites her after she discovers the plans.
The group travels to Sweden and arrives at the commune, where they meet Simon and Connie, an English couple invited by Pelle’s brother Ingemar. During their stay, the visitors are offered psychedelic mushrooms, which trigger hallucinations for Dani, including visions of her deceased sister.
As the midsummer festival unfolds, the group witnesses a disturbing ritual called the ättestupa, in which two elderly commune members attempt to end their lives by jumping off a cliff. When one of them survives the fall, the commune members crush his skull with a mallet, explaining that this is a normal tradition for those who reach the age of 72.
The unsettling events deeply affect the visitors, but they decide to stay so Josh can complete his research. Meanwhile, Christian decides to write his own thesis about the Hårga, leading to tension between him and Josh, who feels his idea has been stolen.
The film explores themes of grief, relationships, and cultural rituals, creating a haunting and unsettling narrative.
