**Storyline:**
In 1970, American college student Billy Hayes travels to Istanbul, Turkey, for a vacation. Before leaving, he attaches 2 kg of hashish bricks to his chest. As he and his girlfriend prepare to board a flight back to the United States, Turkish police detain Billy due to heightened security measures against terrorist threats. After a strip search, Billy is arrested.
A mysterious American, nicknamed “Tex” by Billy due to his strong Texan accent, arrives to assist him, acting as a translator at the police station. Billy claims he purchased the hashish from a taxi driver and offers to help the police locate him in exchange for his release. At a local market, Billy identifies the driver, who is arrested, but the police refuse to free Billy. He attempts to escape but is quickly recaptured.
Billy spends his first night in a local jail, where he sneaks out of his cell to steal a blanket to combat the freezing cold. The next day, he is violently beaten by the chief guard, Hamidou, for the theft. A few days later, Billy is transferred to Sağmalcılar Prison, where he meets fellow Western inmates: Jimmy, an American convicted of stealing candlesticks from a mosque; Max, an English heroin addict; and Erich, a Swedish drug smuggler. Jimmy warns Billy that the prison is dangerous for foreigners, and no one can be trusted, not even children.
Billy’s father, a U.S. representative, visits him alongside a Turkish lawyer to discuss his case. During the trial, the prosecutor accuses Billy of drug smuggling. However, the lead judge shows sympathy, sentencing him to four years for drug possession. While Billy and his father are heartbroken, the lawyer insists this is a favorable outcome.
