Description: “Metal Lords,” a film celebrating the essence of heavy metal music and those who embrace it, falls short of delivering a truly impactful experience. Directed by Peter Sollett, this coming-of-age story revolves around two teenage misfits who form a hardcore metal band. Despite its lighthearted and comedic tone, the movie ventures into some unexpected and darker themes. While it touches on the classic elements of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, it struggles to strike the right balance, ultimately failing to resonate deeply. Just as the story starts to gain momentum, it abruptly concludes, leaving the audience wanting more.
The narrative follows Kevin and Hunter, friends since childhood who have endured the trials of adolescence together. However, their bond is tested when they enter high school. After Hunter’s mother left him and his father, he found solace in heavy metal music, a passion he shared with Kevin. Bands like Metallica, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath became their idols, their posters adorning the walls of Hunter’s basement, their sanctuary. Inspired by these rebellious icons, Hunter develops a defiant attitude, fueled by his feelings of abandonment and resulting in a bitter demeanor.
The duo considers forming a band, with Kevin on drums and Hunter on vocals and guitar. However, their plans gain traction with the arrival of Emily, a Scottish transfer student who quickly masters the cello and has a fiery personality when off her medication. Her presence proves to be the catalyst they need to pursue their musical ambitions. Around the same time, their school revives the Battle of the Bands competition, igniting Hunter’s dreams of fame. Yet, despite Kevin’s encouragement, Hunter’s reluctance to include Emily in their group creates tension, testing their friendship and challenging Kevin’s loyalty.
