Description: Nick Halloway, a stock analyst, leads a life marked by avoidance of responsibility and meaningful connections. At his favorite spot, the Academy Club, his friend George Talbot introduces him to Alice Monroe, a television documentary producer. The two share an instant attraction, leading them to a passionate encounter in the ladies’ room and a planned lunch date for Friday.
The next morning, Nick, battling a hangover, attends a shareholders’ meeting at Magnascopic Laboratories. Bored by Dr. Bernard Wachs’s presentation, he steps out for a nap. Meanwhile, a lab technician accidentally spills coffee on a computer console, triggering a meltdown. The building is evacuated as an apparent explosion occurs, but instead of debris, much of the structure becomes invisible—including Nick.
CIA operative David Jenkins arrives on the scene and discovers Nick’s invisibility. As agents transfer Nick to an ambulance, they mock his future as a scientific experiment. Terrified, Nick escapes. Jenkins convinces his superior, Warren Singleton, to keep the discovery under wraps to claim credit for capturing Nick, who could be the ultimate secret weapon.
Nick hides at the Academy Club and seeks Dr. Wachs’s help to reverse his condition. Wachs agrees, but Jenkins kills him to maintain secrecy. Jenkins’s team reviews Nick’s background, revealing his solitary life: no spouse, deceased parents, few friends, and a lack of commitment to his job. Jenkins remarks that Nick was already an “invisible man” before the accident.
Determined to fight back, Nick infiltrates CIA headquarters to gather incriminating information. Jenkins discovers him and offers a chance to join the agency, but Nick refuses, disgusted by the idea of becoming an assassin. A confrontation ensues, but Nick manages to escape.
