Description: Gaylord “Greg” Focker, a nurse living in Chicago, plans to propose to his girlfriend, Pam Byrnes. However, his intentions are interrupted when they are invited to the wedding of Pam’s sister, Debbie, at her parents’ home on Long Island. Greg decides to make a good impression on Pam’s family and propose in front of them, but his plan is derailed when the airline loses his luggage, which contains the engagement ring.
Upon arriving at the Byrnes’ home, Greg meets Pam’s father, Jack, her mother, Dina, and their cherished cat, Jinx. Jack is immediately suspicious of Greg and openly criticizes his career as a male nurse and other perceived differences. Despite Greg’s attempts to win Jack over, his efforts backfire. Things become more uncomfortable when Jack administers an unexpected lie detector test, and Greg later learns that Jack is a retired CIA operative.
As Greg interacts with the rest of Pam’s family and friends, he continues to feel out of place. His attempts to impress them lead to a series of mishaps: he accidentally injures Debbie during a pool volleyball game, causes a sewage flood by using a faulty toilet, and sets the wedding altar on fire. Misunderstandings also arise when Pam’s brother, Denny, inadvertently makes it seem like Greg uses marijuana. To make matters worse, Greg loses Jinx and replaces him with a stray cat he spray-paints to resemble Jinx, creating a mess in the house (though the real Jinx is eventually found).
By this point, the entire Byrnes family, including Pam, agrees that Greg should leave Long Island until the wedding is over. Desperate to salvage the situation, Greg reveals that he has seen Jack engaging in suspicious activities with shady individuals and that Jack is planning a secret mission after the wedding.
