The story follows Sheila, played by Kaley Cuoco, and Gary, portrayed by Pete Davidson, who meet at a New York bar. Sheila spots Gary from across the room, confidently asks him for a drink, and seems to predict his responses. Their quick-witted banter leads to a classic New York date: dinner at Panna II Garden in the East Village, dessert from an ice cream truck, a ferry ride, thrift shopping, beers at a polka bar, and a nighttime stroll along the East River.
However, Sheila reveals a twist: she’s a time traveler from 24 hours in the future, reliving their first date repeatedly to experience its magic over and over. She disguises her time-travel revelations as playful roleplay, but the joke grows tiresome. Despite the actors’ efforts to create chemistry, the film’s repetitive structure becomes more annoying than charming, devolving into an awkward and arguably indefensible conclusion.
The first third of the movie, written by Noga Pnueli and directed by Alex Lehmann, fails to elevate the stakes or expand the scope of Sheila and Gary’s looped romance. Sheila, who was suicidal before discovering the time machine, travels back using a tanning bed at a nail salon run by the dry-witted manicurist June, played by Deborah S. Craig. Each time, Sheila arrives at Gary’s bar wearing the same yellow gingham dress, with only subtle changes to her hairstyle.
The film struggles to balance its quirky premise with genuine emotional depth, ultimately falling short of the charm found in similar time-loop stories like Palm Springs.
