Description: Jo Mitchell, an 18-year-old high school senior from Ohio, enrolls at North Shore High School with dreams of attending Carnegie Mellon University, her late mother’s alma mater. On her first day, she crosses paths with “The Plastics,” a clique led by Mandi Weatherly, accompanied by Chastity Meyer, a quirky girl with a bold personality, and Hope Plotkin, a hypochondriac. Jo also meets Abby Hanover, whom Mandi views as a rival. Despite Jo’s efforts to steer clear of the Plastics, tensions arise between them and Abby.
Jo’s father, a mechanic specializing in NASCAR engines, has passed down his skills to her, making her proficient in mechanics. She joins an advanced shop class, where she meets Tyler and develops feelings for him. Jo’s primary mode of transportation is a Vespa motor scooter. Through a voice-over, it’s revealed that Jo’s mother passed away when she was just an infant.
After giving Abby a ride home, Jo meets Abby’s father, a successful infomercial entrepreneur. He offers to pay Jo’s college tuition if she befriends Abby and ensures she stays out of trouble. Motivated by her desire to attend Carnegie Mellon, Jo reluctantly agrees. She, Tyler, and Abby grow close, but Jo learns that Tyler is Mandi’s stepbrother. Meanwhile, Mandi escalates her pranks, even sabotaging an engine Jo’s father was repairing with artificial sweetener and coffee.
When Jo and Abby discover that Mandi is planning a birthday party, Jo encourages Abby to throw her own event, open to everyone instead of being invite-only. After the Plastics hear music from Abby’s party and find no one at Mandi’s, they attempt to ruin the celebration. Hope spikes the pizza with ipecac, but Jo notices the odd smell and stashes it away. When the Plastics arrive, they’re shocked to find no one vomiting. Jo then gives the tainted pizza to Nick, Mandi’s boyfriend, who vomits on her after she kisses him.
