A Little Friendship Never Killed Anyone.|Jun. 12, 2015|USA|105 Min.|PG-13
Genre: Comedy;Drama
Description: Seventeen-year-old Greg Gaines, who humorously describes himself as having the face of a “little groundhog,” is a senior at Pittsburgh’s Schenley High School. He tends to avoid forming close connections with his peers. When he learns that Rachel Kushner, a former childhood friend, has been diagnosed with leukemia, his parents insist that he be there for her during this difficult time. Despite an awkward initial meeting, Greg manages to bond with Rachel over her pillow collection, and his quirky personality and honesty gradually win her over.
Greg introduces Rachel to his collaborator, Earl, with whom he creates short films parodying famous movie titles. Earl reveals to Rachel that Greg avoids calling people his friends out of fear of rejection. Despite Greg’s hesitation, they share their film collection with her, which she finds amusing. As Rachel undergoes chemotherapy and loses her hair, Greg starts spending more time with her, focusing less on school and more on lifting her spirits. Although Rachel’s health deteriorates, Greg reassures the audience that she does not die in the end.
Madison, a popular girl at school, encourages Greg and Earl to make a film dedicated to Rachel. Meanwhile, Rachel persuades Greg to apply to a local college. Greg becomes so consumed with completing the film that he neglects his schoolwork and eventually stops attending classes altogether. When Rachel decides to stop her chemotherapy, Greg accuses her of giving up on herself, while Rachel criticizes his lack of selflessness. Heartbroken, Greg leaves, realizing he can no longer help her.
