The story begins with a mother leaving her frightened son, Thomas, in the care of scientist Ava Paige and the WCKD organization. Thomas and other children are placed in a walled maze in a glade as part of WCKD’s experiments.
Years later, after escaping the maze, Thomas and his friends—Teresa, Newt, Minho, Frypan, and Winston—are taken to a facility run by Mr. Janson. He claims the facility is a safe haven protecting them from WCKD, the Flare virus, and the infected “Cranks.” However, Thomas grows suspicious and investigates. With the help of Aris, another maze survivor, Thomas discovers that WCKD’s leader, Ava, is still alive. He also learns that Mr. Janson is working for WCKD, conducting experiments on immune individuals while searching for the Right Arm, a resistance group hiding in the mountains.
The group, now including Aris, escapes the facility into the desolate outside world known as the Scorch. Janson orders WCKD troops to track them down. The group takes refuge in an abandoned shopping mall, where they encounter the Cranks—zombie-like humans infected by the Flare virus. Winston is bitten by a Crank, and as his condition worsens, the group is forced to let him end his life to prevent a full transformation.
While crossing the desert, Thomas spots a distant civilization. During a thunderstorm, Minho is struck by lightning but survives. The group seeks shelter in an abandoned facility, only to find it filled with chained Cranks. They meet Brenda and Jorge, leaders of a dangerous survivor group who use the Cranks as guards. Brenda and Jorge agree to help the group reach the Right Arm, leaving their own group behind.
Shortly after, WCKD, led by Janson, storms the facility. Jorge destroys the place with explosives, allowing most of the group to escape except Thomas and Brenda, who are left behind.
The story continues as Thomas and Brenda fight to reunite with their friends and uncover the truth behind WCKD’s sinister agenda.
