Description: In 2020, the movie *Max Cloud* tells the story of a space cruiser that crashes on a planet housing an intergalactic prison. The film explores themes of escapism and self-discovery through the lens of a classic video game.
Parents in the 1980s often warned their children about the dangers of getting too absorbed in video games. However, if more kids had experienced being literally pulled into a game, as happens in *Max Cloud*, the allure might have decreased. The movie, starring Scott Adkins, follows a player who is transported into a game, reminiscent of *Tron*, and uncovers some awkward truths behind the familiar tropes of escapism.
The game’s protagonist, Max Cloud, is a self-proclaimed hero with a godlike physique and a confident attitude earned through his combat skills. However, his ego overshadows his supporting team, whom he dismisses as inferior without recognizing their contributions or their hidden depths. His mantra, “Kick ass first, ask questions if there are survivors,” highlights his lack of personality.
Max and his team are intentionally designed as two-dimensional characters, reflecting the simplicity of late-’80s and early-’90s side-scrolling beat-’em-up games like *Double Dragon*, *Streets of Rage*, and *Battletoads*. These games predate the industry’s focus on storytelling and character development. Director Martin Owen uses Max’s overwhelming arrogance as a central joke, emphasizing the shallow nature of such characters.
