**Storyline:**
Matto Pal, a daily wage laborer from a village near Mathura, treasures his bicycle above all else. For 20 years, it has been his trusted companion, taking him to work in the city. **Review:**
Prakash Jha excels in portraying rustic authenticity, both as a director and an actor, and his role as Matto Pal is no exception. For Matto, a construction laborer, the bicycle is not just a means of transport but a lifeline. Every day for two decades, he has relied on it to reach work, doing his best to keep it functional. With a sick wife and two young daughters, Neeraj and Limka, to support, Matto cannot afford a new bicycle and repairs the old one himself to save money. His world turns upside down when a tractor destroys his bicycle, rendering it unusable. The story follows his journey to acquire a new cycle and whether it brings a change in his fortunes.
The film mirrors village life—slow-paced, simple, and uneventful. While the bicycle saga may seem trivial, it subtly layers harsh realities faced by the rural poor: a flawed education system, lack of clean water, electricity, medical facilities, and the exploitation of villagers by politicians. The bicycle symbolizes the vicious cycle of poverty that Matto struggles to escape. M Gani’s direction is commendable, though the film occasionally feels drawn out with minimal plot progression. The cinematography captures the essence of rural India, from vast fields to narrow village lanes and overcrowded hospitals.
