Description: “Matir Moina,” a 2002 film, is set in the late 1960s during the turbulent period in East Pakistan leading to the Bangladesh War of Liberation. The story revolves around a rural family grappling with cultural, religious, and political upheavals. Narrated through the eyes of a teenager named Anu, the film offers an autobiographical glimpse into the director’s childhood.
Anu lives with his strict Muslim father, Kazi, a practitioner of homeopathic medicine, and his mother, Ayesha, who has lost her vivacity after marrying Kazi. The family also includes Anu’s younger sister, Asma. Kazi’s brother, Milon, is politically active, opposing Pakistan’s military rule and aligning with left-wing ideologies. Despite Kazi’s disapproval, Milon introduces Anu to Hindu festivals and cultural activities, showcasing the secular traditions of Bengal, such as folk songs, Puthi recitation, and rural fairs.
Kazi eventually sends Anu to a Madrasa (Islamic school) to reinforce his religious upbringing. There, Anu befriends Rokon, an outcast who invites him to imaginative games. Meanwhile, tragedy strikes when Asma falls ill and dies due to Kazi’s refusal to use modern medicine. At the Madrasa, Rokon faces harsh treatment, including a forced exorcism by the headmaster.
As political tensions escalate, divisions emerge within Anu’s family and the Madrasa. Ayesha begins to assert her independence, while Kazi clings to his belief in Pakistan’s religious unity despite the mounting chaos. The film poignantly captures the intersection of personal and political struggles during a pivotal moment in history.
