The story follows Matilda Wormwood, a young genius who endures neglect and mistreatment from her father Harry, a car dealer, her mother Zinnia, and her brother Michael. Despite her challenges, Matilda is intelligent and independent, finding comfort in the books she reads at the local library. When her parents refuse to send her to school, Matilda retaliates by adding bleach to her father’s hair tonic and gluing his hat to his head. After Harry tears up her copy of *Moby-Dick* and forces her to watch TV, Matilda’s anger causes the television to explode.

Harry strikes a deal with Miss Agatha Trunchbull, the tyrannical principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary School, to admit Matilda as a student in exchange for a car. Matilda’s teacher, Miss Jennifer Honey, recognizes her exceptional abilities and suggests she be moved to a higher class, but Trunchbull denies the request. When Miss Honey visits Matilda’s home to discuss her potential, the Wormwoods show no interest. Trunchbull harshly punishes a student, Bruce Bogtrotter, by forcing him to eat an entire chocolate cake in front of the school. Matilda rallies the students to cheer Bruce on, leading to a five-hour detention for the entire class.

Later, Trunchbull accuses Matilda’s father of selling her a faulty car and locks Matilda in “The Chokey” as punishment. She is eventually rescued by Miss Honey. Another student, Lavender, places a newt in Trunchbull’s water jug, and when Trunchbull accuses Matilda, Matilda uses her telekinetic powers to tip the glass, splashing Trunchbull with the newt.

Miss Honey invites Matilda for tea and shares a secret: her mother passed away when she was young, and her father’s stepsister, Trunchbull, took over her care but subjected her to abuse. The film explores Matilda’s journey of standing up against injustice and discovering her extraordinary abilities.
