Description: Mary Kom, born Mangte Chungeijang Kom, is the daughter of a rice farmer from Imphal. Fascinated by a boxing glove she found in the remains of a 1991 air crash, she developed a deep interest in boxing despite her father’s disapproval. During an early encounter, she chased a boy and ended up in a boxing gym, where she met coach Narjit Singh, who had trained Asian champion Dingko Singh. Kom shared her aspirations with Singh, who agreed to train her only if she proved her dedication. She began attending the gym daily, keeping it a secret from her father but informing her mother. Impressed by her commitment, Singh started coaching her and suggested she adopt the name Mary Kom.
To help her family, Kom challenged a local wrestler to win back their cow, which they had sold due to financial struggles. During this time, she met footballer Onler Kom. After winning a state-level championship, her father confronted her, leading to a difficult choice between him and boxing. Despite the emotional conflict, she chose boxing. Later, after witnessing her victory in the 2002 Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championships on television, her father reconciled with her and apologized for not understanding her passion. Meanwhile, Onler proposed to her, promising never to ask her to quit boxing. After winning the 2006 Women’s World Amateur Boxing Championships, Kom agreed to marry Onler, despite her coach’s disapproval.
Following her marriage, Kom became pregnant and temporarily gave up her boxing career to focus on her family. She gave birth to twins and later applied for a government job. However, she declined the position of a police constable, feeling that as a world champion, she deserved better. It saddened her to realize that people no longer recognized her achievements.
