**Storyline:**
Martha, a 22-year-old woman, has spent a significant amount of time living in a secluded cult in the Catskill Mountains. The cult’s charismatic leader, Patrick, gave her the name Marcy May during her initiation. Eventually, Martha decides to escape the cult and flees into the woods, finding her way to a nearby town. In a diner, she encounters Watts, a fellow cult member, who tries to convince her to return, but she refuses. Martha then calls her sister Lucy, who takes her to a vacation lake house in Connecticut that she shares with her husband Ted, a wealthy architect.
While staying with Lucy and Ted, Martha exhibits increasingly erratic behavior: swimming naked in a public lake, sleeping excessively, refusing to eat, and arguing with her sister and brother-in-law about their lifestyle, particularly their focus on careers and material possessions. Lucy admits she had abandoned Martha in the past and is now trying to rebuild their relationship. At the same time, Lucy and Ted are attempting to start a family of their own. One night, Martha intrudes on Ted and Lucy while they are intimate, causing tension. Later, she tries to contact the cult but hangs up when a female member answers using the code name Marlene Lewis.
Through flashbacks, Martha remembers the traumatic events that led to her escape. She recalls being drugged and raped by Patrick during an initiation ritual, a ceremony she later participated in for new female members. Patrick also pressured her to kill a cat, which she refused. Martha then became involved in burglaries with other cult members, culminating in a violent confrontation where a homeowner was fatally stabbed. Witnessing the murder triggers a mental breakdown, and Patrick harshly criticizes her for failing to adhere to the cult’s principles.
