**Plot Summary:**
Marian Holland cleverly persuades Sidney Strutt, the head of a tax consulting firm, to hire her without requiring references. Months later, she steals nearly $10,000 from the company’s safe and disappears. Changing her identity, Marian, whose real name is Margaret “Marnie” Edgar, travels to Virginia, where she stables her beloved horse, Forio. She then visits her ailing mother, Bernice, in Baltimore, whom she financially supports.
Mark Rutland, a wealthy widower and owner of a publishing company in Philadelphia, learns about the theft during a business meeting with Strutt. Recognizing Marnie from a previous encounter, Mark is intrigued. Months later, Marnie applies for a position at Mark’s company under the alias Mary Taylor. Mark hires her, fully aware of her true identity. During a weekend overtime session, Marnie suffers a panic attack triggered by a thunderstorm. Mark comforts her and eventually kisses her, sparking a romantic relationship. It becomes evident that Marnie struggles with nightmares and has an extreme emotional reaction to the color red.
Shortly after, Marnie steals money from Mark’s company and flees once again. Mark tracks her down to the stable where Forio is kept and blackmails her into marrying him. This decision upsets Lil, Mark’s former sister-in-law, who harbors feelings for him. Lil grows suspicious when she notices Mark’s significant expenditures since marrying Marnie. During their honeymoon cruise, Marnie rejects physical intimacy, leading Mark to eventually force himself on her. The next morning, she attempts to drown herself in the ship’s pool, but Mark rescues her.
Lil informs Mark that Marnie’s mother is still alive and residing in Baltimore. Mark hires a private investigator to look into her past. Meanwhile, Lil overhears Mark admitting to Marnie that he has settled Strutt’s claims against her. In a bid to cause trouble, Lil invites Strutt and his wife to a party at the Rutland mansion. Strutt recognizes Marnie, but Mark convinces him to remain silent. When Marnie confesses to additional thefts, Mark takes steps to repay her victims and drop the charges against her.
