Description: The 2023 film *Manobjomin*, directed by Srijato, falls short of expectations despite a talented cast. While it’s unfair to demand poetic cinema from a newcomer, the film fails to deliver on fundamental aspects of storytelling. Set in Tollywood, the movie could have been evaluated more leniently if not for the industry’s recent strides. The story follows Sanket, a banker, and Kuhu, an NGO owner, who aspire to build a school in a rural area. However, their plans crumble when Sanket’s loan application is denied, and their grant request falls through. Their only remaining option involves manipulating an elderly but wealthy man, Baren, played by Paran Bandopadhyay, which becomes increasingly difficult to justify.
Baren, though not stingy, refuses to fund a school he knows nothing about. The plot takes a turn when two con artists approach him, offering to sell plots in heaven—referred to as “surreal estate.” Skeptical at first, Baren eventually agrees after a bizarre séance, only to realize he’s been scammed. Meanwhile, Sanket and Kuhu’s actions, particularly in the film’s final moments, make it hard for audiences to sympathize with them. Their lack of urgency in addressing Baren’s medical crisis while focusing on their personal lives further diminishes their credibility.
Overall, *Manobjomin* struggles to find its footing, leaving viewers hoping for better work from Srijato in the future. The film’s disjointed narrative and questionable character choices overshadow its potential, making it a forgettable entry in Tollywood’s recent lineup.
